French prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. Archbishop of Paris (1848-57). He is best known for supporting the 1848 government, officiating the 1853 marriage of Emperor Napoleon III, 
 
ALS - Autograph Letter Signed, one page, 8 December 1856, shortly before his assassination in a church by a disgruntled cleric. Untranslated but potentially significant.  Addressed to General Guillaume Mathieu-Daumas, Director of Algerian Affairs within the French Ministry of War in Paris starting in April 1850. A specialist in North African matters and fluent in Arabic, he oversaw indigenous Arab affairs during France's early colonial administration of Algeria. Light toning and customary folds given its age. Overall very good to fine.
