Italian cardinal; archbishop of Turin. Declared a Servant of God in 2014.

SP - Signed black/white, matte-finish, image: measure 3.5"x5.5". Signed on the lower white mount.

Ballestrero was a member of the Discalced Carmelites. He became a leading progressive voice in the Italian episcopate during his time as head of the Italian Episcopal Conference in the pontificate of John Paul II.  He was likewise known for being reserved when it came to the Shroud of Turin as opposed to the enthusiasm of the pope. The cardinal permitted testing of the shroud and announced that the relic itself was a product of the Middle Ages as opposed to the genuine burial cloth of Jesus Christ. Nevertheless, scientific investigation continues on the shroud.

BALLESTRERO, Anastasio (1913-98)
