American Congregationalist clergyman, social reformer and speaker, renowned for his support of abolition of slavery, his emphasis on God’s love, and his 1875 adultery trial. One of the most celebrated preachers of his day.

ALS – Autograph Letter Signed, one page, no date with original mailing envelope (likely while pastor of the Plymouth Church, Brooklyn).  Reads:  My dear Sir:  My sister, Miss C.E. Beecher, left with me a list of her publications which I enclose.  She could not give dates & publisher in many cases; & only approximately in others.  It may or may not be of some service to you.  Truly yours, Henry Ward Beecher.

Accompanying Pastor Beecher's letter is a two-page list of publications by Catharine Beecher (1800-78)  entirely in her hand.  She was an American educator known for her forthright opinions on female education and vehement support of the many benefits of incorporating  kindergarten into childhood eduction.  Sister of Henry Ward Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of the famous antislavery “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”.  Included is a vintage steel engraving of Reverend Beecher.
