Abbey of Gâtines, (Villedômer, Indre-et-Loire)

Abbey of Gastines is located in Villedomer, in the French department of Indre-et-Loire. It was founded by Hugh, Archbishop of Tours, in 1137. The monks there follow the rule of Saint Augustine. Following a fire at the end of the century, Thibault de Blois had it rebuilt; the new church was consecrated in 1207. During the wars of religion, it was looted by Protestants. The monastery was restored in 1564. In 1737, the monks rebuilt a new house and a pavilion for the accommodation of the abbot. In 1791, it was sold as national property. It is the subject of a registration as a historical monument by decree of June 1, 1948.
