Cardinal-archbishop of Palermo; earlier in his career he served in various Curial posts.

ALS - Autograph Letter Signed, two sides of official letterhead of the Sacred Congr. for the Conistory, 11 May 1965.  Addressed to Monsignor Corrado Balducci who, at the time, was stationed in the Middle East.  Friendly content in which he mentions Beyrouth and Jerusalem.  Hurriedly penned as was his style.  Merits further research.

He was elevated to the cardinalate in 1979, becoming Cardinal-Deacon of S. Maria Ausiliatrice in Via Tuscolana. He was Cardinal Protodeaconfrom 22 June 1987.
