French cardinal; longtime bishop of Lille (1928-68). Champion of progressive Catholic movements; instrumental in the founding of the Worker Priest Movement. Employers angered by his progressive stance labeled him "the Red Cardinal". In the 1950s Rome put the brakes to Lienart's engagement with the movement.
TLS - Typewritten Letter Signed, one page, 13 June 1936, addressed to Monsignor (future cardinal) Efrem Forni who, at the time, was a counselor at the French nunciature in Paris. This is a confidential letter assuring Forni (and the nuncio) tht the organization L'Agence Univers would not be allowed to participate in the World Congress of Youth for Peace. Merits further research. Signed as cardinal archbishop of Lille.
