American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. Archbishop of Seattle. Bishop of Helena, MT. Professor of Chemistry and President of Carroll College. Noted anti-nuclear activist and author. In the mid-1980s he was silenced by the Holy See for some of his socio-political positions, eventually forced into retirement.
