Supreme pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church. The first non-Italian pope since Adrian VI in the 16th century. Archbishop of Krakow. Active during Vatican II where he made contributions to two of its most historic and influential products, the Decree on Religious Freedom (in Latin, Dignitatis humanae) and the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World (Gaudium et spes). Pope Paul VI created him a cardinal in 1967. In 1981 an assassination attempt was made on his life (see other image of assassination signed by Stanislaw Dziwisz, his long-time personal secretary). Proclaimed a saint in 2014 by Pope Francis I.
