Croation Roman Catholic cardinal. Archbishop of Zagreb (1970-97). Proclaimed a cardinal in 1983. He was known as 'the Rock of Croatia' for his defense of human rights and urgings of peace and forgiveness during the independence conflict and the Bosnian War. Kuharić was proclaimed a Servant of God.

Kuharić was ordained by Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac whose ministerial life Kuharić sought to restore. As a result of his and others efforts, and medically-approved miracles, Stepinac was eventually beatified by the Catholic Church.
