Despite credible allegations of repeated sexual misconduct, the fact remains that McCarrick was a brilliant fundraiser, well connected to prominent politicians. He was considered a power broker in Washington, DC.  Within the church he was variously regarded as a moderate or progressive and was active in social justice causes. He was the most senior church official in modern times to be laicized and the first known case of a cardinal being laicized for sexual misconduct.
