Spanish cardinal; papal secretary of state. Declared a Servant of God by Pius XII in 1953.
LETTER SIGNED: two pages, 24 September 1903. Addressed to Maestro di Camera (and future cardinal) Gaetano Bisletti. Reads: The Holy Father has resolved to entrust to a special Commission the task of overseeing the custody and distribution of the objects currently housed within the Sacred Palaces—specifically those that are, or may come to be, His property. By His Holiness's will, this Commission shall be presided over by the Most Illustrious and Most Reverend [Name], and shall be composed of Monsignors Misciatelli, Sanz de Samper, and Scapinelli, assisted by Monsignor Carrolini, who shall serve as Secretary. It shall further be the duty of this same Commission to ensure the diligent preservation of the aforementioned objects, employing the methods best suited to prevent not only their loss but also their mere deterioration; furthermore, regarding the eventual distribution of these items, the Commission shall receive orders directly from His Holiness, or shall submit to His Holiness such proposals as it deems most appropriate and fitting. In communicating to you these august intentions of the Holy Father—so that you may expedite their implementation—I take pleasure in availing myself of this opportunity to reiterate the assurances of my most distinguished esteem. The Holy Father has resolved to entrust to a special Commission the task of overseeing the custody and distribution of the objects currently housed within the Sacred Palaces—specifically those that are, or may come to be, His property.
