English cardinal and saint. Oxford academic and, originally, a priest of the Church of England. A leader of the Oxford Movement. Instrumental in the founding of the Catholic University of Ireland, which evolved into University College, Dublin. Beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in September 2010 on a visit to the United Kingdom. Proclaimed a saint by Pope Francis I. Newman was a distinguished literary figure and hymnalist.
