Supreme Pontiff (1963-1978); longtime Papal Substitute Secretary of State; cardinal-archbishop of Milan.
ALS - Autograph Letter Signed: one and one-quarter pages on heraldic-crested stationery. Dated 10 January 1955. Written to the Marquis Mario Mocchi, Referendary of Honor of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, headquartered in Milan. Letter reads: I understand what interests Your Excellency (together with a conspicuous representation of the Order) wanted to demonstrate on the occasion of my entry into Milan, and I was able to admire the group of knights flanking the altar in San Eustorgio. The homage of such a large and honorable group, at the first meeting with the Milanese people, in the ancient and venerable basilica, did not escape my particular consideration and I am obliged to express my deep thanks. I ask you to also accept it as a sign of my personal wishes for Your Excellency and for the illustrious members of the order in Milan, to whom all, with a sense of fraternal and devout gratitude, my pastoral blessing goes. Your most obliged, G.B. Montini, Archbishop.
Desirable early letter as archbishop. Some slight feathering of letters on the reverse but, overall, very good to fine.
