Supreme leader of the Roman Catholic Church (1800-24). Bishop of Tivoli and Imola. Created a cardinal in 1785. Signed the Concordat with France in 1801 but, eventually, was taken prisoner by Napoleon and exile in France until 1814 when he was permitted to return to Italy.
MS - Manuscript dated 1818 in the form of a papal breve on vellum. Addressed to Nicholas Conaty, Bishop of Kilmore (formerly) Cavan who owned a large estate and was a member of the nobility. This was a common practice for members of the noble classes to have private chapels. Signed in the lower right hand border by Ercole Cardinal Consalvi as papal secretary of state. Untranslated. Fine condition.
