Italian cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. Papal majordomo from 1914-27. Elevated to the cardinalate in 1916. Bishop of Recanati-Loreto. Counselor of the French nunciature 1899.
ALS - Autograph Letter Signed, four-pages of a folded sheet on Nonciature Apostolique de France letterhead. Accompanied by original mailing envelope. Addressed to Cavaliere Tommaso Boschi, Bologna. Letter summary: Ranuzzi writes to the marquis to thank him for his letter which deeply comforted him through its expressions of kindness and esteem. He apologizes for the delay in replying, caused by demanding new work and absence of his secretary. Ranuzzi regrets not having been able to properly greet friends and relatives in Bologna where he stayed only briefly by order of the Pope before traveling to Paris to deliver a papal encyclical. He goes on to discuss the situation of the congregation, nothing that the cardinal intends to entrust its spiritual guidance to Count Testi Rasponi, whom he considers well suited to the role. He suggests a collaboration with Father Salviati for executive matters and recalls unsuccessful attempts to engage Monsignor Zucchini. Out of affection for the congregation he declares himself willing to postphone his definitive resignation, if needed, to help ensure a stable transition. Ranuzzi concludes by expressing his continued spiritual closeness, promising prayers, asking that his gratitude be conveyed to the members of the congregation, and reaffirming his lasting affection and friendship despite his change of position.
