Archbishop of New York; auxiliary bishop of Boston under Cardinal O’Connell. Military Vicar to the Armed Forces.  Long-time friend of Pope Pius XII. So great was his influence over the church in the US that he was referred to as the American Pope. Not everyone agreed.

Letter of thanks on being appointed Archbishop of New York.  Accompanied by an original 8"x10" color, matte-finish, formal portrait of Spellman by the late photographer entitled the Smiling Cardinal.
