French cardinal of the Catholic Church; Pro-Prefect and Archivist of the Vatican Library; during WWI he served as an intelligence officer. At the start of WWII, Pope Pius XII refused to release Tisserant from his duties in the Vatican Library in order to join the war effort in France. Served in several curial posts; university professor fluent in several languages.
