Italian cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. Prefect of the Sac. Congr. for Religious. Papal nuncio in Egypt and Arabia. Nuncio to Romania. Nuncio to France. President Charles de Gaulle insisted that Valeri be removed as apostolic nuncio to France for collaborating with the Vichy Regime. There is some contradiction in the story. In August 1942, Nuncio Valeri disputed Marshal Pétains claim that Pope Pius XII understood and approved of France's increased hostility towards Jews. Interestingly enough, upon his dismissal from France, Valeri was awarded the Grand Cross of the Legion d'honneur. He then was appointed to the Secretariat of State in the Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs.
