Numerous conspiracy theories began to circulate the very day that John Paul I died. In David Yoder's 2012 book, The Power and The Glory: Inside the Dark Heart of John Paul II's Vatican, author Yoder suggested that three prelates conspired in the pontiff's death: Villot, Cardinal Cody and Archbishop Paul Marcinkus, along with three mafiosos. The day of his ascendancy to the Throne of Peter, the pontiff gave a list of personnel transfers to Villot in light of the Vatican Bank scandal.
