Austrian cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. Archbishop of Milan. Suffragan bishop of Passau. Advanced to the see of Milan in 1818. Engaged in many positive activities to aid clergy, immigrants and others. Established homes for the eldery and sick. Reformed and introduced new disciplines in school curriculum such as mathematics, physica and ecclesiastical history. Endowed seminaries with faculty distinguished for their knowledge and piety and strongly opposed governmental interference in seminaries. Between 1823-41 he published four editions of the Brevario Ambrosiano. His charity became particulary evident in 1833 during the cholera epidemic that ravaged his archdiocese.
