Through his periodical work, Abbott sought to provoke reform among the middle and upper classes. Strong opponent of slavery. At the end of the Civil War he became the executive secretary of the American Union Commission, later known as the American Freedmen's Union Commission in New York.

Early in his ministry, Abbott held to conservative theology. But, as he matured, his emphasis shifted to the emerging liberal theology that had been influenced by the cultural modernism of the late 19th century.
