ALS - Autograph Letter Signed ‘Very truly yours J.H. Card. Newman’, to John Rivington, the publisher, about Newman’s desire for my writings to be placed in some intelliglble & uniform shape explaining why he has excluded “the Andria” [Newman's 'Prologue to the Andria of Terence']. 2 pp. 6 x 4 inches, very fine, remains of hinge along one edge of the second page where the letter was formerly mounted. A contemporary lightly pencilled annotation reads “noted by Mr. Hibbard...” 22 October 1884. Letter reads: Dear Sir, Mr Lilly [W.S.Lilly, secretary to the Catholic Union] does not return to London till tomorrow. At my age I naturally wish my writings to be placed in some intelligible and uniform shape - but the proposal made to me was not on my initiation. My reason for not including the Andria was because I fancied there were corrections, in writing, of the text. If this is not the case, or if you do not think this an adequate reason, I wish it added to the others. Very truly yours, J.H. Card. Newman.
